In the Middle Ages this was one of the leading trading centres of northern Europe; once its channel to the sea silted up and it lost that economic weight, the urban fabric survived almost unchanged. The entire historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city stays at a scale you can cross on foot.
