City guide
Ghent
In the Middle Ages it was among the largest cities north of the Alps, second only to Paris; today it hosts one of Belgium's biggest universities, which gives it the feel of a working city rather than a tourist one. Gravensteen Castle and the Van Eyck brothers' Ghent Altarpiece stand at either end of the same walk.
